Project: STEAM Logo for SCI: Solve, Collaborate, Investigate
In my senior year, I assisted with the startup of a new student magazine on campus, SCI: Solve, Collaborate, Investigate. I created the brand standards, website design, logo, flyers, and social media icons. Creating the logo involved a short concept stage, and then a longer stage of drafting before the finished piece was decided on. My partner, who was spearheading the project, gave me some very loose concepts to work with and left all of the process to me. Being in college, I knew our audience—my peers at the time—would spend more time looking at a brightly colored logo with bold lines that would stand out from the polished school branding that was everywhere on campus.
I explored several science-related concepts, including a moon, beaker, DNA, and test tube. After three rounds, we settled on the current concept of using a test tube for the letter I. The magazine focuses on a multidisciplinary mix of art, social science, and typical STEM subjects. A creative logo was needed, so by using the test tube for the letter “i,” I hoped to achieve a balance that would help truly represent that magazine and really connect to our college audience.
